I hear this all the time whenever I am knitting publicly. People in America tend to think of anything to do with the needle arts as archaic and kitsch. The thing is that as we are using natural resources to make textiles, we are depleting our earth’s resources. At the same time, we are becoming occupied with smartphones apps and games. People are looking for something to do when unoccupied beside playing Candy Crush. Enter the needle arts. I am speaking of knitting, crochet, needlepoint, cross stitch, sewing, and tatting. These are old pastimes that are making a comeback. The best thing about all of this? It is a low cost way to relax and escape. Every time I tell someone I knit and crochet, I hear stories about someone learning years ago but let life take over their free time. Now they want to relearn. This makes me happy.
